Tokyo
Tokyo, the modern capital of Japan, is the largest city in the country. It became the political capital of Japan under the Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1868) and remained the capital after the Meiji Restoration. In addition to all of the conveniences of a modern city (including an exceptional, if crowded, subway system), Tokyo also has many gardens, temples and shrines. In addition, the Imperial Palace is located in the center of the city. Guided tours of the palace are available through the Imperial Household Agency.
