NaraNara was Japan's first permanent capital and was established in 710 CE. It remained the capital until 784 when the capital was moved to Nagaoka. The city is about an hour from Osaka and an hour from Kyoto so it is very convenient for travellers to visit. The largest statue of the Buddha in Japan is located at Todaiji Temple which was built in 752. It is the world's largest wooden building. Unfortunately, I was unable to get a good picture of the statue as it was too dark in the temple for my camera. |
