Kumamoto
We visited Kumamoto Castle on our way from Beppu to Nagasaki. It is in the middle of Kyushu and very striking with its black walls and white eaves. It was built in 1607 by the Kato Clan but was taken over by the Hosokawa Clan half a century later. It was the center of the last civil war in Japan. This occured in 1877 when an army of former samurai rose against the new Meiji government. During the civil war, much of the castle was destroyed and the current buildings are reconstructions that were built in the 1960s.
