Kamakura
Kamakura is a lovey coastal town about an hour south of Tokyo. In 1192, Minamoto Yoritomo established the Kamakura Shogunate (or Bakufu). This government lasted until 1333 when the Emperor Go-Daigo was able to overthrow teh Kamakura Shogunate. One of the main attractions (for foreigners especially) is the Great Buddha or Daibutsu that is 13.35 meters (about 44 feet) in height. It is the second largest statue of the Buddha in Japan (the largest is in Nara). It was cast in 1252. Kamakura has five great Zen temples as well as numerous Shinto shrines.
